In order to teach in Wisconsin teachers are required to earn a license issued by the State of Wisconsin. MTEC is the authority that recommends licensure for those students who have successfully met the program requirements described below:
Portfolio
The portfolio reflects the student's understanding of the 10 Wisconsin Teaching Standards. It is organized around each standard and must include statements that show the student's understanding of the standard, how they have applied it in their work and examples of how the student incorporated the standard into her/his teaching. The portfolio remains on file at the MTEC office as a record of each student's performance.
Grade of B or higher
Students must earn a grade of "B" or higher in all course work and seminars.
Successful Teaching Experience
Students must demonstrate effective practices in the classroom. Success is determined by observations of MTEC mentors, assessors and school supervisory staff using standard evaluation tools.
Praxis II
Students must earn a satisfactory score on the Praxis II test. The Praxis II measures educational and/or subject knowledge. The specific Praxis II test is determined by the type of license sought by the candidate. Study guides and other Praxis support can be found on the Praxis web site. MTEC recommends that students complete the Praxis II as soon as possible. It can take up to 6 weeks to process the results. Any delay in taking or retaking the exam will delay the processing of the request for a Wisconsin Teaching License.
License Application
Each candidate must complete the application for Wisconsin licensure through MTEC. To process the license the candidate must have successfully completed all program requirements, complete the WI Department of Instruction license application, have a photo ID and pay the required DPI application fee. Each successful candidate earns a 5 year WI teaching license and must meet the Wisconsin PI 34 requirements for license renewal.
