Master's Degree

The Master's program is MTEC's newest professional development offering. The program is offered to educators through a relationship with Mount Mary College, an accredited higher education institution.

The MTEC/Mount Mary College Master of Arts in Education is designed for teachers serving diverse children in an urban classroom. Coursework connects instruction with teachers' classrooms making this degree very "hands-on" in its approach. It is intended for new or veteran teachers who desire to deepen their knowledge of student learning and improve student achievement.

The MTEC — Mount Mary Master's Program is:

Relevant

Coursework is connected to a teacher's real work in his/her classroom. Up to 12 credits can be earned through action research projects conducted in the teacher's own classroom.

Affordable

With AmeriCorps funding and forgivable loans this is the most affordable Master's Degree in the area.

Accredited

Mount Mary is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission. The Higher Learning Commission accredits, and thereby grants membership in the Commission and in the North Central Association, to degree-granting educational institutions in the North Central region: Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Mount Mary has been serving students since 1913.

Eligibility

The program is open to those who:

  • Have a Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Are currently teaching in an urban classroom

Most of the Master's Degree candidates are practicing educators serving urban students. The program is open to teachers licensed in any subject, level or certification area.

In order to participate in the program teachers must be the teacher assigned to a specific classroom in an urban school. Teachers in substitute positions are not eligible since there is no guarantee that they will work with the same student group long enough to research the effect of their strategies.
