The mission of the MTEC Center for Sustainability is to cultivate and support teacher attitudes, techniques and practices which encourage student understanding of fundamental ecological, environmental, economic and equity issues. To fulfill its mission the Center for Sustainability will:

• Coach teachers to implement classroom lessons and AmeriCorps service projects that develop student understanding and commitment to sustainable practices
• Raise community awareness of the need for sustainable practices through university courses and presentations
• Facilitate a Master's Degree program in Sustainable Futures

What is “sustainability”?

In 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development created a definition of sustainability. It stated that:

“Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

It is from this point of view that MTEC begins to define its role in creating an environmentally sound, economically fair and just future for our children and grandchildren.
